Flash MX is really Flash version 6.
Flash MX 2004 is Flash version 7.
So, you should be able to find some use in Flash version 6/7 tutorials in Flash 8. The main difference is that the version of Flash you have will have new features that your tutorials won't cover.
However, your tutorials should make for a great starting point.
