What happens if a camera flash is right in a baby's face during photographs?

I keep reading not to take pictures with a flash too close to a baby's face but why? Nobody says what the damage may be. What if the pictures were taken with the camera right in front of the baby's face by an inexperienced photographer and nothing was done because I am a new mom and didn't know? What happens if a camera flash is right in a baby's face during photographs?
Did they keep taking pics without a pause in the middle?

A babies eyes dont really focus right so just imagine having a flashing camera non stop - you would be blind. So as long as it wasnt on super flash I wouldnt worry about it but consult a doctor if the baby doesnt seem to ';see';What happens if a camera flash is right in a baby's face during photographs?
Well you know how the flash from a camera makes you kinda like ';whoaaa'; and makes your vision kinda blurry? Picture that, but not even being used to seeing for a while because your eyes are adjusting to things....
because the baby can loose its visoin easier because he/she is smaller
